Aples and Ba-nay-nays

Corn on the cob grilled is the best.  Tonight on our nightly family beach bike-ride, mom fell off her bike.  "I am too old to be falling off bikes!" she said.  Now I know where I get it.  Big brother stole my bike, Ol' Santa Fe, but karma got him back...the chain fell off approximately every 30 feet or when he got over-zealous with the pedaling.  Served him right.  Banana and I are starting our own Horseshoe crab rescue group, we pretended they were actually blast-ended skrewts and chased each other with them before we put them back in the ocean from where they were beached.  Tonight ended with a piece of homemade key lime pie and the first quarter and a half of game 4 of the NBA finals...couldn't be happier.

Pocohontas: Medicine Woman

Bike riding on the beach is one of my new favorite things to do.  Also, a racoon lives under this house.  And, I counted six baby alligators this afternoon.  Finally, I rescued a large horseshoe crab from death by birds. Just call me Pocohontas.  Also you can call me the Medicine Woman.  I reset my mom's dislocated toe.  Don't act like you are not impressed.  Because I am.

"I've got a shrimp in my pants!"

Today we saw more birds, dolphins, rabbits and baby crocodiles.  Banana also found a shrimp in her swimsuit bottoms.

Big Brother got some oysters for lunch, we all went on a beach bike ride, and now are watching game 3 of the NBA finals...with some homemade Kahlua.

Could things get better?  I doubt it.

Yeah Yeah Yeah!

We are finally all 5 out of my one-bedroom apartment and into the beach rental...magic.  I am excited to not sleep on the floor, fighting over the down-comforter with Banana.  We spent a fantastic day at the beach and despite one odd moment where we were all on bicycles cruising down the street channeling The Sound of Music, and the time Banana chased mom down the beach trying to get her to use a horseshoe crab shell as a helmet, things have all gone swimmingly.  Tonight Banana made her fabulous key lime pie and we are all relaxing exactly how one should relax after a long day at the beach...in the AC, in front of the flat screen, with adult beverages.  Perfect.

Blissness

Luuuuurve having my family here.  Last night I about peed my pants at the gas station when we got out of the car and dad goes "Look, that jeep has bullet holes in it".  I don't know why but that hit my funny bone, hard.  Maybe to see the juxtaposition of my dad and the thug life here.  Weather is perfect, everyone is getting along, all the luggage arrived (not on the same flight, but it got here), my favorite sandwich shop for lunch and then a few hours at the pool...can't wait to get to the beach house tomorrow!!

Therapeutic Touch

The other night I used my therapeutic touch as a nurse.  When there are accidents and traumas and people are upset and crying, I never feel like I am a good person to give them hugs, I imagine it would be like getting a huge from a strange young short person and who wants that?  I feel like the point of hugs is to be enveloped with goodness and I really can’t do much enveloping at my size.  The motherly nurses are better at that stuff. Anyways, I never usually offer hugs or anything like that and when I do hug someone it usually ends up just being awkward.  Last night this 6'5" black guy was sitting in the hall waiting for someone and as I started to talk to him, he started crying. "Oh my gosh, are you crying??!" I said. (Don't worry, the therapeutic part is coming) "Yes and I don't know why!" the guy goes.  "Oh man, oh man," I said. "Um, I am going to give you a hug right NOW!" I said and I just hugged him as hard as I could.  It totally caught me off guard.  He started laughing he was caught so off-guard too I think, then I started laughing, and it totally made things better. "Man, I really appreciate that!" he said after I was finished hugging him, and I think it really did help, because at least he was laughing and smiling at that point.  Hugging strangers in the ER is kind of like kissing a boy, it has to be the right time and the right circumstances and you have to think the person wants it and is going to reciprocate.  That is probably why I am so bad at it.  I think I may have found my method of hugging at work: loudly announcing what I am going to do, and then just doing it.  If only that worked with kissing, too….
