Mexican Gumbo

Ok, so I have been sitting here, tired, wanting to sleep, but trying to think of something interesting/different that happened yesterday that I can write about, and I finally got something.  When I came on shift the nurse giving me report, while making small talk told me about his day.  Apparently there had been a big trauma, a young boy came in with a massive head injury, and I mean a head injury, complete with crushed skull and brain matter on the stretcher.  That is not the interesting part (to me).  The interesting part to me was how it happened...I asked and then laughed because I thought he was joking.  The cause of injury was "buggy accident".  Apparently it was an Amish family in an Amish community and they were utilizing their primary mode of transportation (second only to antique school bus I think) and somehow the horse spooked and the boy fell out.  After that the details were a bit hazy, either the buggy fell on the boy, he was caught and dragged, the mother fell on the boy, or he just landed really hard on the ground, but I can honestly say I have never had or heard of a buggy accident patient before, and it is completely something unique to this region and a few others of the US.  I do not know the boy's prognosis and it was a horrific, sad accident. Anywho...buggy accident...that is a new mode of injury for me....and there I was thinking I couldn't get easily surprised anymore. : )

Lame sauce

I am painfully aware of how lame my blog has become, and I have meditated on this "lame-ness" and have come up with a few reasons as to why.  1) When I was writing when I first began, and the first 6 months or so after that, I was still a very new nurse with little to no experience, and everything was new and interesting to me. 2) I had a much smaller social network and had to entertain myself much more often 3) I was in a strange new land called The South, where, once again, everything was new and interesting.  Those are the three key things I can find that have largely contributed to the demise of my blog.  So...where from here?  Obviously, (ok, maybe not obviously), I want to try get my writing spark back, and have interesting stories and fun experiences, but that is sadly not always the case.  Take last night for instance, I had about 20 patients - we were BUSY! - and every single one was either drunk, suicidal, headache, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, or toothache.  EVERY SINGLE ONE.  I started out with a retarded man who had diarrhea and ended with a drunk woman with hepatitis.  There is seriously nothing interesting to write about when I look back on those 12-hours for inspiration.  Ug.  I need a new perspective.  Maybe a solution to the blah's at work will also contribute to the blah's with the blog.  I will work on it... 

Land of Nod awaits

I have been MIA as of late.  It just means nothing that exciting is going on.  Just finished with two nights on, one more tonight and then I have some time off.  We were busy last night, like normal for a Monday.  Some nights a hot shower and bed after work sound as good as winning the lottery, this morning was one of those times.  So happy to be getting ready for sleep.  Bonus - last night a patient thanked me for being so kind...who does that anymore?  Regardless, it made my night ; )

last night

Last night started out a little rough but got lots better after about 1am.  The high point was when a drunk patient yelled at me "You behave like a lady and I will behave like a gentleman!" when I tried to tell him he was going the wrong way after discharging him.  Here is to hoping I do not get called in tonight!

above-average night

Last night was waaay better than Sunday night even though we were short two nurses.  I knew it was going to be an ok night when I managed to put my eyeliner on perfectly even though I was running behind.  Tonight is going to be even better because I get to have a grande iced carmel macchiato with soy on my way to work. : )  I can't wait.

optimist...or insane?

I work tonight and tomorrow night and then am on call Thursday night.  Right now it seems like I work the rest of my life, but I know (hope) it will go by quickly once I get in the swing of things.  Unable to really sleep today, hopefully I sleep better tomorrow after being up all night. 

Tonight is the last day (remember I am nocturnal) of my cleanse!  I am beyond excited and am going to celebrate with wings on Thursday and look forward to chocolate chip cookies, french fries, sandwiches with more than just meat and bread, and the occasional macchiato before work again. 

Here is to tonight being better than Sunday night : )

After I wrote that I thought of the definition of insanity....doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  Either I am an optimist or and idiot going to work and doing the same thing and hoping it will be different....
