Last night at work, as one patient was brawling with two security guards, one patient was laying on the floor screaming and crying, and the police were bringing in another in only his whitey tighties and some sunglasses, one of the new techs said to me. "After awhile with all the over-stimulation you just kind of get immune to everything.". I agreed and told her it would eventually carry over into daily life outside of work, say if she saw someone get shanked walking down the street or if someone pooped in the produce aisle at wal-mart, she probably wouldn't bat an eye.
My smoke alarm battery is chirping, those stupid bleepity bleep bleepers keep chirping AFTER the battery is removed. I am trying to decide whether or not my fans will drown it out as I sleep or if I should just go buy another battery now...but I am so tired...but the chirping is so shrill....and I wanted to get all my laundry folded before I went to bed...but I need to put clean sheets on my bed...omg.
Finally, a creative outlet for myself, just in time for my first quarter-century on earth. Fashion, friends, the life of the single girl and hilarity to follow.

Axolotl please
Studying more pet ads on craigslist last night I came across an ad selling Axolotls. What are Axolotls you say? Just the cutest little happiest Mexican salamander you have ever seen! They live up to 10 years, are relatively simple to take care of, and look awesome. Also, they were $10-$25, buy two get one free. Bonus, these ones had the gene that makes them glow under black lights. Double awesome. THEN I read that they regenerate limbs! Could they get any more fascinating? Of course then I had to research them more and found out that yes, those are external gills, they are native to Mexico swamps and were a staple in the Aztec diet. Can you imagine how desperate the Aztec's must have been to eat swamp reptiles? Here is a picture. So precious, such a lil guy, I imagine he is saying "Tell me about your night at work, and all your problems, I want to listen! Then we can hang out and drink chocolate milk and watch Alice in Wonderland."

Here is another one looking happy.

"I caught myself a worm!" He is saying. This of course led me to look at more funny Axolotl pictures and I was not disappointed:

There was this nice chart.
And then finally, this awesome GIF. Fantastic.
How could that not make my work night better?

disgruntled much? read the pets
I had a patient in triage last night that was so angry, no matter what I did she was bound and determined to be mad and aggressive. When it comes to patients like those, you can never win...you just be as nice as possible and...be as nice as possible. This usually makes them more mad.
You have to find lots of ways to entertain yourself during aforementioned night shifts...yes, still on night shift. A new fun diversion my unit clerk friend and I do (besides answering the phone as Buddy the Elf..."what's your favorite color?") is I read craigslist ads to her in a variety of voices, usually the Pet section. Here are some actual excerpts, spelling and all:
"Nicaraguan Red Tail Boa, previously abused, a little jumpy, must have no fear but otherwise beautiful and loveable" - Sounds fun...also how do you abuse a snake and does a snake remember that??
"I have 8 freshwater Tiger moray eels (Gymnothorax Polyuranodon) that I don't want to part with but bills come first" - What?
"My daughter is in need of a companion puppy preferably a lab or golden retriever. I have a hot wheel collection I'm willing to trade" - again...What?
"I've got some aggresive fish that need to go beacuse I have new plans for my tanks" - What new plans could you have for fish tanks besides fish? And why add the fish are aggressive?
And my favorite in a city overrun with rabbits....EVERYWHERE...in the Lost and Found section, "Found-friendly bunny rabbit. Very sweet, misses it's family. Please email or call with description. It will be taken to the Animal Shelter on Monday" - I am guessing it is wild and yes it probably does miss its family and no the shelter probably doesn't want it.

DUH. (sorry mom)
Common sense is not very common these days. These are all phrases I had to use last night, many in triage:
"Yes, your heart will feel like it is racing if you do meth"
"If you pick at your scab, it will bleed. I don't care what the nurse at the jail told you"
"If you are asleep and then you sit up and open your eyes, yes, that means you are awake"
"You need to go to the dentist, not the ER if all your upper teeth are rotten and you want them pulled. You don't have any money? I see that you are still smoking 2 packs a day. Use that money"
"No, just because your child's "earwax looks weird" does not mean you need to rush him to the ER"
"I am really sorry your car broke down but no we don't give free hotel coupons"
"No you cannot sit in the lobby until your bus comes in 3 days"
"I can't give you a doctor's note saying you were seen in the ER and to give you time off work unless you were actually seen in the ER"
Oh man. Here are some things I am thankful for to end this on a happy note:
Listening to Enya on my drive home
No traffic on Sunday mornings
I found cherry kool-aid at work
Also...I had a great idea this morning. We should take some of our more persistent transients, (the ones that have to be escorted off property multiple times at night) and shower them and comb their hair and put them in a hospital-issued polo shirt and have them be the greeter at the door like at Wal-Mart. It is a win-win situation....they are not trying to check into the ER every hour or out calling ambulances to bring them to the ER, we give them a warm place to sit, clean shirts and unlimited coffee. I am a genius.

Come on people...
Whoa. Work has been busy. Record number of patients in the ER seen in the last 24 hours. My feet are sore from being on them so long.
Insane story from a friend of mine....a fellow RN in the ER where I work, my age... was driving home yesterday morning and while in town crossing the railroad tracks she noticed a man laying down on the tracks, about 50 feet away in the snow, waving and yelling for help. It was cold and there was snow (see my post from yesterday), so she pulled over and got out and went over to the man. He was yelling that he hurt his leg (she said it was obviously broken). Of course about this time a train is coming down the tracks, so my friend pulls the guy off of the tracks, maybe hurting his leg more but definitely getting him out of harm's way. So this is all before 8am on a cold, snowy morning during rush hour traffic. A train was coming so all traffic was stopped and the thing that shocked my friend the most she said was that out of all the traffic that was stopped waiting for the train downtown, NO ONE got out to help her pull this man off the tracks. A young woman dragging an older man in the snow and cold and no one even rolled down their window to yell and see if she needed help...can you believe it? I am so disappointed in people. After she drug him clear of the tracks she called 911 and police and an ambulance showed up and still no other Samaritans offered their help. How sad. He made it to the hospital and she made it home to bed but really??

New Snow
New Year's was a quiet night in the ER, it probably helped that we were on ICU/trauma divert because we were already holding inpatients in the ER so we didn't get any of the drunken car crashes thank goodness. Last night it rained and rained and then it finally turned to snow. The drive from work this morning was quiet and gorgeous even though it was icy. There was so much untouched snow I was wishing for my siblings and mom and dad and the old Land Cruiser so we could get pulled behind it on sleds like we used to do (not in town obviously). I was the first one to turn onto the street where my apartment complex is this morning and besides a giant jack rabbit I saw bouncing around, the first one to walk through the snow. Here is a picture. Snow is so pretty....and it muffles outside noise for better daytime sleep ;)
